Key findings
- 6 of 8 countries publish a comparable price. The lowest is Thailand at £155; the highest published figure is £2,620, before travel.
- From the UK, 2 of 6 countries are cheaper than a private health check-up at home before travel, and none after an example flight and 2 hotel nights. The lowest UK self-pay price we found is £385.
- No official waiting-time figure is published for this in the UK, Canada or Ireland that we could use; it is mostly bought privately.
- No verified comparable price in Mexico and China. A gap means we could not find a price the provider publishes itself, not that the treatment is unavailable.

What a health check-up is
A health check-up (called ningen dock in Japan, geongang geomjin in Korea, executive check-up in Thailand and Turkey) is a bundle of tests done in one visit: blood and urine tests, a doctor's examination, an ECG, often an ultrasound and a chest X-ray or CT, and in bigger packages an endoscopy, a colonoscopy or MRI.

About whole-body MRI. Some check-up packages include a whole-body MRI. The American College of Radiology says there is not enough evidence to recommend total-body screening for people without symptoms, risk factors or a family history, and warns that it finds many non-specific results that lead to unnecessary follow-up tests (ACR statement, 17 April 2023). If a scan finds something, the follow-up usually happens at home.

How to compare health check-up prices
- Compare the contents, not just the price. A cheap package may leave out the ultrasound or the endoscopy.
- Check whether the doctor's summary is in English and whether a doctor explains it to you on the day.
- Women's and men's packages are often priced differently.
- More tests are not always better: whole-body scans in healthy people often find harmless things that then need more tests.
Do not travel for a health check-up if
- Investigating a symptom you already have. A package is screening, not a diagnosis.
- Replacing the screening your home health service already offers for free (bowel, breast or cervical screening).
Before you book
- Most packages need you to fast from the night before. Book a morning slot.
- Ask what happens if a test finds something: is a specialist available the same week, and at what price?
After you come home
- Bring the full report to your doctor, not just the summary page.
- Treat a "borderline" or "follow up" note as a reason to see your doctor, not as a diagnosis.
Bringing results home so your own doctor can use them is covered in how to bring your results home.
Health check-up abroad: questions
Where is a health check-up cheapest abroad?
Before flights, the lowest published prices we found are in Thailand (about £155 to £774), Hungary (about £201 to £1,260) and Japan (about £388 to £735). The cheapest country is not always the cheapest trip: a short flight can matter more than the price difference.
How long is the wait for a health check-up on the NHS?
NHS England does not publish a waiting-time figure for this that we could use. Ask your GP or dentist what the NHS offers in your case.
How much does a private health check-up cost in the UK?
about £385 to £1,120 at the UK providers we checked, before any consultant fees they list separately.
What does the price of a health check-up usually include?
On this site the price should cover one package for one person; contents differ widely, so each row says what it includes. Compare the contents, not just the price. A cheap package may leave out the ultrasound or the endoscopy.
How long do I need to stay abroad for a health check-up?
Half a day to one day for most packages; packages with endoscopy or several scans can take two days. Ask the clinic for the schedule in writing before you book flights.
